PART 1 - THE INTERVIEW

What is your earliest musical memory and what pushed you towards pursuing a career in the music business?

"I can remember my earliest childhood friend Roger playing 'Smoking in the Boys Room' by Brownsville Station. We said we were going to start a band and I was going to play drums. We were probably about five or six. I eventually became a drummer, but in high school, I discovered that I had a singing voice. With that knowledge, sitting behind the drums became much less appealing. So from then on, this whole thing has just been a big part of my life."

What kind of records were on around the house when you were younger and would you say that these records still influence your music today?

"My parents had lots of 45s that I enjoyed. When I was very young, I remember being transfixed by 'Yesterday' by The Beatles, 'I Am a Rock' by Simon and Garfunkel, and 'I Get Around' by The Beach Boys, to name a few. They also had a Dion LP, and I remember being obsessed with the song 'Run Around Sue'. Our sound owes quite a bit to the sixties, so these records just may have stuck with me!"

Had you been involved in any other bands or musical ventures before Eddie Japan?

"Yes, a few. Proud of all of them, but they were not bands of note."

How did Eddie Japan begin?

"In 2006, I sent an email to a Boston trumpet player named Chris Barrett. I had never met Chris, but he played with a Boston artist named Paula Kelley whose songwriting I really admired. He was curious enough to see what I had in mind, and then he just started bringing in great players."

Can you introduce us to the band and tell us what you play?

"The aforementioned Chris Barrett on trumpet and keyboards, Bart LoPiccolo on guitar, Eric Brosius on guitar, Chuck Ferreira on drums, Charles Membrino on bass, Kate Connell and Emily Belastock on backing vocals, and me on lead vocals."

Where did the name Eddie Japan come from?

"In high school, I had a fairly prominent widow's peak, so for a time, friends called me 'Eddie Munster', after the character on the sixties TV show. 'Japan' came from the line in the song 'Ziggy Stardust', '...like some cat from Japan'. Years before Eddie Japan came together, I had the idea of writing a glam concept record in the vein of Ziggy. At some point, I put the two words together and thought it sounded like a good name for my Ziggy character. I never wrote the glam record, but when this band was considering names, I tossed it out, and that was that."

How would you describe the sound of Eddie Japan?

"Our former guitar player labelled us 'melancholic Pop classicists'. Overheard recently was this descriptor: 'Gene Pitney sings the Echo & The Bunnymen songbook at the Copa Room in 1966'. In a nutshell, we draw from the sixties and eighties to create slinky, sad, soaring pop music."

Your sound is very unique in today’s musical climate. How did you find yourself playing this type of music?

"For years prior to forming Eddie Japan, I had been listening to a lot of Scott Walker and Divine Comedy, and I also discovered a record called 'Forever Changes' by the sixties band, Love. These artists all employ orchestral elements, and I knew I wanted to go in that direction. Morrissey and The Smiths have always been a big influence, though it's probably heard more in the lyrics than in the music. I guess I wanted to do something that was the exact opposite of indie rock - big, dramatic, and vocal-centric with less of an emphasis on loud guitars."

You have released one EP to date entitled ‘Modern Desperation, Part 1’. Where did this title come from?

"We're living in desperate times. The political climate in America and the actual global climate are things that often make me feel world-weary. I find it hard to be optimistic about the future because I think the planet is in real peril. It seems that greed – in all the ways it manifests itself – has become a monster that we can't control. (Actually, our first EP came out in 2009, and that one is called 'Four By Six')."

Does the title reflect the subject matter of the songs?

"The songs aren't political (though 'Modern Desperation, Part 2' will contain a track about income inequality), but the title also related to the personal - the feeling that one is not on solid ground. There is a worm in the heart of man."

Our favourite song from the EP is ‘The Bridges I Have Burned’. What is this song about and what influenced it?

"Glad you like this one! This song was me trying to write a Jacques Brel song. It's about acknowledging the negative aspects in life, even honouring them in a way. It seems the collective modus operandi in America is to banish all negative thoughts and emotions. I don't think that's a very sound approach to life. When we repress, we give the negative stuff more power. You have to dance with it a bit. And I think we glean just as much from our failures as we do our successes."

The sleeve of the EP seems to be quite retro. Do you consider yourselves to be a ‘retro’ band?

"It was purposefully retro! The sleeve was inspired by the work of Reid Miles, who designed many covers for the jazz label, Blue Note, in the fifties and sixties. When I think of 'modern', I think of that time period, so I thought that design sensibility would work well with the title. While we have definite retro influences, we're not a novelty act that comes out in Nehru jackets and love beads!"

In your career to date you have received a number of awards including a Boston Music Award and Rock ‘n’ Roll Rumble Award. Many artists say they don’t care about awards but would you say that this recognition has had a boost on your career in Eddie Japan?

"Last year was a very good year for the band. The Rock 'n' Roll Rumble has been happening for thirty-five years and it is a fairly big deal in Boston. Bands like 'Til Tuesday, The Lemonheads, Dresden Dolls, and Morphine have participated in it over the years. It was a treat to be included, but winning it was hugely thrilling. The Boston Music Award for 'Live Artist of the Year' was a very nice way to cap off 2013. Both wins definitely raised our profile and helped bring in new fans."

Do you have any 'rituals' before you go on stage?

"My only ritual is trying to go easy on the cocktails

Any live dates coming up?

"Yes, we have some dates in Boston this spring. Right now, we are focusing on recording and writing."

Any new songs in the pipeline?

"Yes! We are currently working on 'Modern Desperation, Part 2'."

When can fans expect the next official release?

"Definitely maybe by fall of 2014."

Who would be your dream collaboration?

"I would like to sing with Charlotte Gainsbourg."

Who would be in your dream super group?

"The Last Shadow Puppets. OK, they are/were real, but I eagerly await a follow up! (The artists I admire are all oddballs, so putting them together in one group would be a horror show)!"

PART 2 - THE QUICKFIRE ROUND

Favourite Beatle?

"I appreciate John's songwriting the most but they were all superb."

Favourite band?

"The Smiths."

Favourite new band?

"Lake Street Dive out of Boston/Brooklyn. Their sound is not one to which I would usually gravitate, but they are wildly talented and very appealing."

Favourite song?

"I have dozens of favourite songs. If I'm forced to pick, I guess I would say There Is A Light That Never Goes Out by The Smiths. The opening notes never fail to give me a shiver."

Favourite album?

"Again, hard to pick just one, but The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars is perfect."

Vinyl, CD or download?

"I mostly listen to music while driving, so that rules out the Victrola!"

When you press shuffle on your iPod, what is this first song that comes on?

"My Ship Is Coming In by The Walker Brothers."

Style icon?

"Steve McQueen."

Favourite film?

"Tom Ford's A Single Man is a recent favourite."

Favourite TV show?

"My wife and I have been enjoying Orange Is The New Black."

Who would play you in a film of your life?

"Robert Downey Jr."

Favourite food?

"India Pale Ale."

Football team?

"I don't like American football, and I don't follow English football, but I'll go with Sheffield Wednesday. I think its Jarvis Cocker's team, and I always thought that with a "The" in front, it would be a great name for a band."

IF I WASN'T ME: Our feature on Little Liam's latest EP 'If I Wasn't Me'!

Below if our feature on Little Liam's latest offering, the 'If I Wasn't Me' EP! You can see our review of the EP alongside a track by track from Liam and some excerpts of an interview we did with him last year! Enjoy!

PART 1 - AB SAYS...

Here, AB Records reviews the EP!

"Little Liam have already released an acoustic live album ('Live From The Heart') and a demo EP ('The Beginning'), the former features just two guitars and a voice while the latter features just a piano and a voice. This makes 'If I Wasn't Me' the first full band offering from Birmingham's very own Little Liam and the presence of the rest of the band add double to the final sound. This is saying something as the two acoustic offerings to date are mind blowing. The EP can easily draw comparisons to the likes of The Bluetones, Oasis and especially Ocean Colour Scene. This is no surprise considering frontman Liam Garland was effectively mentored by the OCS boys and there are tales that he played tambourine on the Liam Gallagher/Steve Cradock recording of 'Carnation' when he was just a teenager. However, Liam's songwriting stands out and covers a wide variety of styles - the rock 'n' roll of 'Last Dragz' and 'I Get This Feeling'; the folk rock of 'You Don't Know' and 'Just When I Thought' and the smooth rock of the eponymous title track 'If I Wasn't Me'. Highlights are definitely the two opening tracks 'I Get This Feeling' and 'Last Dragz' as they are simply amazing rock 'n' roll tunes which, at the end of the day, you can't beat. However, the remaining three tracks all have special qualities as well and there is not one weak track on the EP. Also, congratulations have to go to Ange Pyatt for the trumpet and background vocals on the final track 'Just When I Thought' which take the track to a whole different level to the previously released version on 'Live From The Heart'. The only disappointment is the fact that the EP clocks in at less than fifteen minutes! However, we can all be reassured that Little Liam have plenty of unreleased material much of which can be checked out in demo or live format at their soundcloud page. Keep on keeping on Little Liam!"

PART 2 - LITTLE LIAM SAYS...

Here, we catch up with frontman Liam Garland who talks us through the EP track by track!

I Get This Feeling

"Wrote this song after my second gig! I supported Pyro's ex-band Copious in Birmingham and this gig and meeting Jim made me feel so great!"

Last Dragz

"Sorry I wrote this while I was smoking loads of weed but I gave it up and  try to just test it moderately!"

You Don't Know

"About trying to do something your or my own way, and one of the first proper decent songs I wrote!"

If I Wasn't Me

"Personal song really and weird because I was going through a tough time and  things play on your mind, I was worrying too much about what people thought and basically looking in from the outside I'd be able to see what that was but only 'if I wasn't me'!"

Just When I Thought

"Was really just a tune I made at home and never thought nothing of until Jim was certain it had to be in our set, the first night I showed him his hairs were standing on end! Then Ange joined the band and added to it so much it's now kinda expected at gigs!"

PART 3 - THE INTERVIEW

How did Little Liam begin?

"Little Liam began years after my previous band ended. I was recording all my music at home and learning all the instruments to be able to make it sound like a band rather than on my own, we had problems with the last band and people left so it pushed me back a little bit, I went home and over the next couple of years went on to write most of the songs which we now play at our gigs!"

How would you describe the sound of Little Liam?

"We have tried to figure this one out ourselves because it's kind of unique but again we go with smooth rock."

Earlier this year you were joined on stage by Simon Fowler of Ocean Colour Scene. How did this come about and how did it feel to be playing alongside a true legend?

"Amazing! Absolutely amazing! It's a weird one, Ocean Colour Scene were supposed to be playing in Scotland but unfortunately got cancelled and Simon saw us listed in the line up for Welfest so he contacted the organiser to ask me if he could join for a couple of songs! Wow! Ideally again, it would have been him joining the band onstage but it was all so quick we didn't prepare for it and if you have someone like Simon Fowler joining you, you have to be on form!"

All pictures in this article are taken from the Little Liam facebook page!

I KNOW ABOUT YOUR PROBLEM: Our interview with Brighton based band Orchards!

PART 1 - "THE INTERVIEW"

1 - What was your earliest musical memory and what pushed you towards pursuing a career in the music industry?

Sam: "All our families, whilst not necessarily musicians themselves, loved music. So I guess it was always around us when we were kids, whether it was being played in the car or at home. As for why we want to pursue it as a career; there was nothing any of us could see ourselves doing other than playing music as a career, we haven’t given ourselves any other option!"

2 - Had you been involved in any other band prior to Orchards?

Sam: "We’ve all been playing in bands since our early teens, Catherine always focused more on singer-songwriter style music whilst the boys and myself have always been involved in the heavier weirder side of music."

3 - You hail from three separate cities within the United Kingdom and are now based in Brighton. How did you meet and how did Orchards begin?

Sam: "I met Catherine by chance in a bar during fresher's week of our university and we quickly established that we wanted to make music that was different to the stuff that was around at the moment. After jamming for a while with our drummer Will the search begun for a bass player."

Dan: "I had played music with Sam for a few years back in Liverpool so when I was asked to go for a jam everything just fell into place."

4 - Where did the name Orchards come from?

Sam: "Haha, personal joke about plums… I’m sure you could work the rest out yourself!

5 - How would you describe the sound of Orchards?

Sam: "We’d like to think it’s something quite new, a mixture of early nineties grunge, pop structures and prog sensibilities."

6 - Your eponymous debut EP was released earlier this year. What influenced the three songs on this EP?

Sam: "When we wrote the songs and put them together Brighton was in the depths of winter and a f****n’ snowy one at that so I think that came across in the mood of the three songs."

7 - The lead track from this EP is ‘I Know about Your Problem’. What is this song about?

Sam: "It’s about having a drug problem and knowing about it."

8 - Do you have any 'rituals' before you go on stage?

Sam: "Apart from trying to not get too drunk we try to piss each other off a bit, always makes for an interesting show."

9 - Any live dates coming up?

Sam: "Yeah, we're supporting More Than Conquerors in Brighton on 16th October, we're playing a gig with Dead Deer in Shoreditch on 18th October and we're playing Oxjam Fest in Brighton on 26th October. We'll also be booking another UK tour in the new year."

10 - Any new songs in the pipeline?

Sam: "One of the best things about Orchards is everybody writes so we’re constantly forming ideas, but we’ve got a lot in the pipeline just refining them all at the moment."

11 - When can fans be expecting the next release?

Sam: "We have a single release coming in the new year and then an extended EP following shortly after that."

12 - Who would be your dream collaboration?

Sam: "We would have loved to collaborate with Miley Cyrus when she was filming her video for 'Wrecking Ball'..."

13 - Who would be in your dream supergroup?

Catherine: "Tom Waites."

Sam: "John Frusciante."

Daniel: "Nick Oliveri."

Will: "Jon Theodore."

I WANT TO TAKE YOU TO PLACES: Our interview with the superb Fraser Ross!

Photo: New interview with Fraser Ross coming your way very shortly! AB Records

PART 1 - "THE INTERVIEW"

1 - What was your first musical memory and what pushed you towards pursuing a career in the record industry?

"Organising a band of local kids to perform on cricket-bats and paint tins for the neighbours. We played on the veranda that faced onto the lawn, just like a real stage, and think we sold cups of cask wine, raided from the fridge. Pure class from the start. I just like writing songs so I guess it's the only industry that'll appreciate that."

2 - Had you been involved with any other bands prior to becoming a solo artist as Fraser Ross?

"Oh yeah! I play percussion in a thirteen piece Jamaican dance band called 'Newtown Rocksteady'. They're based in Wellington, New Zealand, where I used to live. Technically I might not play in that band at the moment but I still consider myself a part of it - heaps of my best friends are in it and I think it'll be a life-long bromance. Also played in Roy G & the Bivinators, which was my first grown up band. Maz, who is the creative genius behind it was a massive inspiration in getting me to view music as an 'actual' profession. I had amazing fun playing maracas in that band."

3 - Why did you choose to become a solo artist instead of forming a band?

"I liked writing songs and didn't really think I needed a band to get them across. Also, I used to be bad at organising people, and felt bad not being able to pay people for their time. I'm changing though, and I want to play with people more and more. There's something about combining musically with other people that's incredibly inspiring. I want to do it a lot. Also, touring is much more fun with a gang."

4 - How would you describe the sound of Fraser Ross?

"The rough presentation of deep themes in the Pacific-folk tradition."

5 - You have released two EP's to date. Your debut was called 'And Birds Do Sing'. Where did this title come from and what was it's relevance?

"It's an updating of a refrain from 'La Belle Dam Sans Merci' by John Keats, which is '...and no birds sing.' It's a poem roughly about a knight who falls for a mysterious and beautiful lady/fairy, who vanishes, and leaves him heart-broken. The whole album just seemed to be related in some way to a similar confrontation, and journey with the mysterious. The opening song became 'La Belle Dam Sans Merci,' a modern retelling of Keats' story, and it launches a journey of discovery for the ghost of John Keats, eventually concluding with a song that lays him to rest in peace in the natural world. I wanted to heal his ghost, so I had to make the title 'And Birds Do Sing'."

6 - Your second EP, "To Places", was released just last year. How would you describe the evolution in your sound between the two EP's and what influenced this second EP?

"I was playing with a band (all members of Newtown Rocksteady), and it's us interpreting my songs with electric instruments. They are all fantastic players so it sounds a lot more professional. We were also recording in Wellington's finest studio, 'The Surgery'.  Lyrically the songs are quite varied, I just wanted to get down the songs we had been playing that summer because I knew I was leaving for the UK soon. I wanted a record of what we were up to."

7 - Any new songs in the pipeline?

"In Glaswegian you could say, 'hunners'. Possibly not spelt like that, but quite a few, yes."

8 - When can fans be expecting a new single, EP or album?

"I'm off to the studio tomorrow to finish what will hopefully be a proper debut album. I've been recording it in the hills of Perthshire, in an old Schoolhouse, where there is no cell reception or houses, just hills, and grass, and sheep, and sky. You can see out into the hills from the recording studio, which is absolutely awesome for my vibe. I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes. I hope it makes people even more happy to be human."

9 - Do you have any 'rituals' before going on stage?

"Not as yet but I'm thinking about making some up."

10 - Any live dates coming up?

"This Saturday I'm playing a house concert in Glasgow. Should be on my Facebook. I also play every second Saturday in St. Andrews at One Golf Place. It's cracking. Once I finish the record I'll be focussing on playing live lots more."

11 - Who would be your dream collaboration?

"Joanna Newsom."

12 - Who would be in your dream super group?

"Robbie Burns in Radiohead."

PART 2 - "THE QUICKFIRE ROUND"

1 - Favourite Beatle?

"John."

2 - Favourite band?

"Sigur Ros."

3 - Favourite new band?

"Anderson, McGinty, Webster, Ward & Fisher or The Nudge."

4 - Favourite song?

"Mr. Tambourine Man."

5 - Favourite album?

"Is This It by The Strokes."

6 - Vinyl, CD or download?

"If I had a house - vinyl."

"Noel Fielding."

8 - Favourite clothing brand?

"Errr...Timaru Op-Shops."

9 - Favourite film?

"The Royal Tenenbaums."

I SHOULD'VE STAYED IN BED TODAY: Andy Gallagher talks to us about his new album with Overhaul!

Part 1 - The 'INTERVIEW'

1 - Had you been invovlved with any other bands prior to Andy Gallagher & Overhaul?

"Yes, since I was thirteen or fourteen I had been playing in bands. I think you've got to do that and soak everything up. Good or bad it makes you a more seasoned player and songwriter."

2 - How did Andy Gallagher & Overhaul begin?

"We began as Overhaul and because the line-up kept changing and it was all my own songs we were playing, it seemed natural to rename the band Andy Gallagher & Overhaul. It meant I could have whoever I wanted in the band and the name would never have to change and it lives up to the band. Overhaul - the act of improving by renewing and restoring."

3 - Where did the name Overhaul come from?

"My wife, Pauline, came up with it."

4 - How would you describe the sound of Andy Gallagher & Overhaul?

"Well, I get told that we are alternative rock but I don't like to pigeon hole my work."

5 - In 2011, you played bass for one of your biggest influences - Gordan Gano. How did it feel playing with someone you held in such high esteem?

"It was a dream come true. I loved that tour from start to finish. Gordon is such a sweetheart of a guy and an amazing songwriter and violinist too. Honestly, I felt so honoured and proud to be a part of Gordon Gano & The Ryan's. I hope we can do it all again sometime soon."

6 - Your next studio album will be called 'Achukma'. Where did this title come from and what does it mean?

"It comes from Choctwa Native American language. Achukma is used a lot in Choctwa to describe a great many things. Peace, goodness, fairness, honesty, good, gracious etc. I liked the idea that one word had so many uses and it was sort of cryptic too."

7 - What can fans be expecting from the new album?

"Good songs, great friends, well written, well performed and well recorded and mixed. A pirate rock song, a song about my time in Milwaukee, a song about a bad day and in hindsight would've been better off staying in bed and a few other songs that I enjoyed writing and recording."

8 - Who would be your dream collaboration?

"I would love to continue collaborating more with all the artists I've worked with over the years but would love to collaborate with Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum, Sean Scholnik of Langhorne Slim, maybe Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Lou Barlow (Sebadoh), Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac), Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age) and J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr)."

9 - Any new songs in the pipeline?

"I'm always writing new songs. I enjoy the process of writing. I find writing very therapeutic. In fact I've got about three or four albums worth of songs to release."

10 - Any new singles, EP's or albums to be released in the near future?

"Yes, 'Achukma' will be officially released on the 28th November 2013, I'm pretty sure there'll be a single or two from that as well as a video. I hopefully intend to make a start on our next album in October at Cava Studios in Glasgow, Scotland with Geoff Allen engineering and co-producing. Joey Huffman (Soul Asylum/Matchbox Twenty), Mike Hoffman (Semi Twang/Delta Routine), Kevin Sellors and I are trying to work out some time in Atlanta, Georgia as part of the new album. Also, Chris Mancini, Kenny Johnson and I will be working on the "Kelburn Sessions" album with Nick Hodge engineering. My idea behind this album is to try and record everything live. Like back in original days of recording. It'll be more about the performance and feel of the songs rather than the piecing the song track by track, overdub after overdub."

11 - Any live dates coming up?

"Our booking agent, Ian Smith at Frusion Agency is working at that right now. Keep your eyes peeled on our website and our facebook page for upcoming shows and tours."

12 - Who would be in your dream supergroup?

"Hmmm, that's a tough one, I'll work with anyone!"

Part 2 - The 'QUICKFIRE ROUND'

1 - Favourite Beatle?

Andy: "Used to be John but now I favour George."

Mike: "When I was a kid Ringo, now John."

Brendan: "George."

Billy: "George."

Kevin: "Respect. But I'll take The Stones over The Beatles any day of the week."

Graham: "George."

Kenny: "George."

Chris: "Stag. Oh, BeAtle - Lennon."

2 - Favourite band?

Andy: "Neil Young & Crazy Horse, NO WAIT, Dinosaur Jr, NO WAIT, Violent Femmes, NO WAIT!"

Mike: "Beatles."

Brendan: "Talking Heads."

Billy: "The Rolling Stones."

Kevin: "Zeppelin."
