I WANT TO TAKE YOU TO PLACES: Our interview with the superb Fraser Ross!

Photo: New interview with Fraser Ross coming your way very shortly! AB Records

PART 1 - "THE INTERVIEW"

1 - What was your first musical memory and what pushed you towards pursuing a career in the record industry?

"Organising a band of local kids to perform on cricket-bats and paint tins for the neighbours. We played on the veranda that faced onto the lawn, just like a real stage, and think we sold cups of cask wine, raided from the fridge. Pure class from the start. I just like writing songs so I guess it's the only industry that'll appreciate that."

2 - Had you been involved with any other bands prior to becoming a solo artist as Fraser Ross?

"Oh yeah! I play percussion in a thirteen piece Jamaican dance band called 'Newtown Rocksteady'. They're based in Wellington, New Zealand, where I used to live. Technically I might not play in that band at the moment but I still consider myself a part of it - heaps of my best friends are in it and I think it'll be a life-long bromance. Also played in Roy G & the Bivinators, which was my first grown up band. Maz, who is the creative genius behind it was a massive inspiration in getting me to view music as an 'actual' profession. I had amazing fun playing maracas in that band."

3 - Why did you choose to become a solo artist instead of forming a band?

"I liked writing songs and didn't really think I needed a band to get them across. Also, I used to be bad at organising people, and felt bad not being able to pay people for their time. I'm changing though, and I want to play with people more and more. There's something about combining musically with other people that's incredibly inspiring. I want to do it a lot. Also, touring is much more fun with a gang."

4 - How would you describe the sound of Fraser Ross?

"The rough presentation of deep themes in the Pacific-folk tradition."

5 - You have released two EP's to date. Your debut was called 'And Birds Do Sing'. Where did this title come from and what was it's relevance?

"It's an updating of a refrain from 'La Belle Dam Sans Merci' by John Keats, which is '...and no birds sing.' It's a poem roughly about a knight who falls for a mysterious and beautiful lady/fairy, who vanishes, and leaves him heart-broken. The whole album just seemed to be related in some way to a similar confrontation, and journey with the mysterious. The opening song became 'La Belle Dam Sans Merci,' a modern retelling of Keats' story, and it launches a journey of discovery for the ghost of John Keats, eventually concluding with a song that lays him to rest in peace in the natural world. I wanted to heal his ghost, so I had to make the title 'And Birds Do Sing'."

6 - Your second EP, "To Places", was released just last year. How would you describe the evolution in your sound between the two EP's and what influenced this second EP?

"I was playing with a band (all members of Newtown Rocksteady), and it's us interpreting my songs with electric instruments. They are all fantastic players so it sounds a lot more professional. We were also recording in Wellington's finest studio, 'The Surgery'.  Lyrically the songs are quite varied, I just wanted to get down the songs we had been playing that summer because I knew I was leaving for the UK soon. I wanted a record of what we were up to."

7 - Any new songs in the pipeline?

"In Glaswegian you could say, 'hunners'. Possibly not spelt like that, but quite a few, yes."

8 - When can fans be expecting a new single, EP or album?

"I'm off to the studio tomorrow to finish what will hopefully be a proper debut album. I've been recording it in the hills of Perthshire, in an old Schoolhouse, where there is no cell reception or houses, just hills, and grass, and sheep, and sky. You can see out into the hills from the recording studio, which is absolutely awesome for my vibe. I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes. I hope it makes people even more happy to be human."

9 - Do you have any 'rituals' before going on stage?

"Not as yet but I'm thinking about making some up."

10 - Any live dates coming up?

"This Saturday I'm playing a house concert in Glasgow. Should be on my Facebook. I also play every second Saturday in St. Andrews at One Golf Place. It's cracking. Once I finish the record I'll be focussing on playing live lots more."

11 - Who would be your dream collaboration?

"Joanna Newsom."

12 - Who would be in your dream super group?

"Robbie Burns in Radiohead."

SO WRONG: Our interview with Frans and Magnus of The Most!

Photo: Our next interview will be with Sweden's finest new beat band, The Most! Watch this space! AB Records

PART 1 - "THE INTERVIEW"

1 - What was your earliest musical memory and what inspired you towards pursuing a career in music?

Frans: "Hearing Elvis and realising what impact he had. When I was about ten living in Manchester I had a friend, who later turned out to be a girl named Pete! We used to sit in the grass and listen to 7" Beatles vinyl's on her portable record player."

Magnus: "Alice Cooper. I hate snakes."

2 - Had you been involved with any other bands prior to The Most?

Frans: "A psychedelic outfit called 'Infra'."

Magnus: "Yes!"

3 - How did The Most begin?

Magnus: "Frans and I got together and started writing."

Frans: "Yeah, we felt like we were exploring new grounds."

4 - Where did the name The Most come from?

Frans: "Oh, many years ago, going through different name changes and accepting the fact that with 'The Shirts' we had reached the lowest watermark we decided to be 'The Most'. Chris Dreja from The Yardbirds once suggested that we'd called  ourselves 'The Others' after seeing a sign at the airport."

Magnus: "It just feels great to be on stage and say 'We're The Most'."

5 - How would you describe the sound of The Most?

Magnus: "Beat music."

6 - You have a very retro look about you as a band and your music also harks back to the 60s beat boom. Do you consider yourself to be a retro band and what do you find so inspirational about the 60's?

Frans: "First of all, what we do comes absolutely naturally. Subconsciously we draw inspiration from what we like but most of the time it might be from the same roots as most sixties bands, that is, delta blues, bluegrass, black soul and R&B."

Magnus: "There are three things that make a good song: melody, groove and energy."

7 - Your latest single is called 'So Wrong'. What is the song itself about and what influenced it?

Frans: "The vulnerability of human nature...sounds pretentious doesn't it! And that it's OK to be wrong, we love you anyway...haha."

8 - Who would be your dream collaboration?

Magnus: "We've already worked with Andy Bell from Oasis and Beady Eye..."

Frans: "Maybe to have Glyn Johns and Jimmy Page as producers."

9 - Any new songs in the pipeline?

Magnus: "Always, and maybe some good ones to."

10 - When can fans be expecting a new single, EP or album?

Frans: "Hopefully before Christmas."

11 - Any live dates coming up?

Magnus: "Working on dates right now. Confirmed are Pet Sounds Bar, Stockholm, November 9th and Purple Weekend, Leon, Spain, December 6th with The Flamin' Groovies and French Boutik among others."

12 - Who would be in your dream supergroup?

Frans: "Gene Krupa on drums, Paul McCartney on bass, Bo Diddley on guitar, Brian Wilson on organ and Ray Davies lead vocals. Hmm...and The Most on tiny, tiny triangles...haha."

Magnus: "Sorry, I'm not into supergroups. A great band is just four guys who know each other well and have played together so much that they make a very strong unit."

PART 2 - "THE QUICKFIRE ROUND"

1 - Favourite Beatle?

Frans: "John McCartney - the grandfather in A Hard Day's Night...very clean!"

FIRE IN THE DAM: We have an in-depth chat with Soul & Fire and review their debut EP!

PART 1 - "THE REVIEW"

So, Soul & Fire, the latest folk/blues/rock band on the scene. What sets them apart though? Well, the answer to this question is there as-of-yet unreleased debut EP, which is due on October 12th. A date for the diaries. The EP shows why the band list Creedence Clearwater Revival as one of their main influences, as they take a more contemporary take on John Fogerty's original rootsy sound and mix it up with some jazzy drums. The first track "Fire in the Dam" makes for a strong opener and sets the tone for the rest of the EP. The band quickly race into a shuffling song called "Freedom" which is more danceable and even more impressive. The band remain on top form through the remaining three tracks - "Toot", "Flower" and "Wishing You Well". In the words of the band themselves, "on every track you can feel both the soul and the fire". A superb effort and from here Soul & Fire can only get bigger and better.

PART 2 - "THE INTERVIEW"

1 - What was your earliest musical memory and what inspired you towards pursuing a career in music?

Paolo: "I've always been, since thirteen years old, a fan of classical and jazz music thanks to my grandfather, greatest music listener in my entire family. From Giuseppe Verdi, Pavarotti, Placido and Domingo to the jazz of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman and I fell in love with jazz drums."

Dave: "I come from a musical family. My dad is an established musician, and all my brothers play, it's just what we do. I was inspired by my parents music collection, they were always playing vinyl's ranging from Beatles and 70's music to much more. I just remember the whole house filled with music, and music seemed a way of life."

2 - Had you been involved with any other bands prior to Soul & Fire?

Paolo: "Dozens of bands from fourteen years but only a few concrete ones."

Dave: "I've always played with my brothers in pubs as a covers band. 'The Mitchell Brothers'. I've jammed with lots of different people but nothing really took off. I had a brief spell with Suicide Party but have been a solo singer/songwriter for a couple of years."

3 - How did Soul & Fire?

Dave: "It all began in Sicily where we met. We jammed and bonded over Creedence Clearwater Revival and realised each others passion for music."

Paolo: "Yes, it was a nice coincidence of life. Join an Englishman and Sicilian both with great love and passion for music."

4 - Where did the name Soul & Fire come from?

Dave: "Soul & Fire was one of my songs from my solo days, but we never got to grips with it as a duo. Then when we came around to renaming the band we racked our brains for weeks. Then Paolo phoned me half drunk and said..."

Paolo: "SOUL & FIRE. It also translates really nicely in Italian, 'anima e fuoco'."

5 - How would you describe the sound of Soul & Fire?

Dave: "We have a very raw sound. Bluesy rock and roll mixed with Sicilian percussion."

Paolo: "The Mafia (also known as Cosa Nostra, in English "Our Thing") ahahahahaha."

6 - Your debut EP is due in October. Can you tell us anything about it?

Paolo: "Great party."

Dave: "Haha, the launch party will be a great night. In regards to the EP itself, we wanted to produce the songs as close as we could to our live sound, so the EP is recorded live and retains our stage energy. It's a good mix of our different styles.

7 - Who would be your dream collaboration?

Paolo: "If they were all still alive Led Zeppelin...or Queen."

Dave: "Many bands spring to mind, but a realistic dream is that it would be cool to get back with my bros one day - with Paolo smashing out a full drum kit."

8 - Any new songs in the pipeline?

Dave: "We're always working on new material so you can expect new songs to appear in our live shows in the coming months."

9 - When can fans be expecting a new single, EP or album?

Dave: "Well the EP is released on 12th October. With regards to a single, we have made a video for our song "Wishing You Well" which will grace your screens very soon. We already have hours worth of material so an album is certainty possible...maybe in the new year."

10 - Any live dates coming up?

Dave: "We are happy to be involved in Music In The City in Southampton on October 5th at Weigh House but our big night will be the 12th."

11 - Who would be in your dream supergroup?

Paolo: "Freddy Mercury - voice, John Bonham - drums, Jaco Pastorius - bass, Dave Mitchell - guitar and Paolo Precoraro - percussion."
