PART 1 - "THE INTERVIEW"
1 - What was your earliest musical memory and what pushed you towards pursuing a career in the music industry?
Sam: "All our families, whilst not necessarily
musicians themselves, loved music. So I guess it was always around us when
we were kids, whether it was being played in the car or at home. As for why we
want to pursue it as a career; there was nothing any of us could see ourselves
doing other than playing music as a career, we haven’t given ourselves any other option!"
2 - Had you been involved in any other band prior to Orchards?
Sam: "We’ve all been
playing in bands since our early teens, Catherine always focused more on
singer-songwriter style music whilst the boys and myself have always been involved
in the heavier weirder side of music."
3 - You hail from three separate cities within the United Kingdom and are now based in Brighton. How did you meet and how did Orchards begin?
Sam: "I met Catherine by chance in a bar during fresher's week of our university
and we quickly established that we wanted to make music that was different to
the stuff that was around at the moment. After jamming for a while with our
drummer Will the search begun for a bass player."
Dan: "I had played music with Sam for a few years back in
Liverpool so when I was asked to go for a jam everything just fell into place."
4 - Where did the name Orchards come from?
Sam: "Haha, personal
joke about plums… I’m sure you could work the rest out yourself!
5 - How would you describe the sound of Orchards?
Sam: "We’d like to think it’s
something quite new, a mixture of early nineties grunge, pop structures and prog
sensibilities."
6 - Your eponymous debut EP was released earlier this year. What influenced the three songs on this EP?
Sam: "When we wrote the songs and put them together
Brighton was in the depths of winter and a f****n’ snowy one at that so I think
that came across in the mood of the three songs."
7 - The lead track from this EP is ‘I Know about Your Problem’. What is this song about?
Sam: "It’s about having a drug problem and knowing about it."
8 - Do you have any 'rituals' before you go on stage?
Sam: "Apart from trying to
not get too drunk we try to piss each other off a bit, always makes for an
interesting show."
9 - Any live dates coming up?
Sam: "Yeah, we're supporting More Than Conquerors in Brighton on 16th October, we're playing a gig with Dead Deer in Shoreditch on 18th October and we're playing Oxjam Fest in Brighton on 26th October. We'll also be booking another UK tour in the new year."
10 - Any new songs in the pipeline?
Sam: "One of the best things about Orchards is
everybody writes so we’re constantly forming ideas, but we’ve got a lot in the
pipeline just refining them all at the moment."
11 - When can fans be expecting the next release?
Sam: "We have a
single release coming in the new year and then an extended EP following shortly
after that."
12 - Who would be your dream collaboration?
Sam: "We would have loved to
collaborate with Miley Cyrus when she was filming her video for 'Wrecking
Ball'..."
