TAKE IT EASY: Jack from Mamas Lips has a chat to us about their debut EP, their new single to be released in October and much, much more!

THE 'INTERVIEW'

1 - Had you been involved with/been in any bands prior to Mamas Lips?

Yeah, the four of us have been in bands together before Mamas Lips and a couple of other projects separately.

2 - How did Mamas Lips begin?

We were all in a band together and when one member left we decided to change the name and write a whole new set worth of songs.

3 - Where did the name Mamas Lips come from?

It was a name we threw around when a couple of us were in college but we didn't end up using it and we thought it fitted with our music fairly well.

4 - How would you describe the sound of Mamas Lips?

It's a healthy mix of old school blues/R&B with a little bit of soul and country too. Heavily Americana influenced but a little heavier than that.

5 - Your debut EP is called 'Take It Easy'. Why?

We decided that the opening track was the one we wanted to lead with so it felt right to name the debut EP after the leading track.

6 - On your debut EP you achieve a very bluesy sound. Was this always the direction you wanted to go with the band and what is it about the blues that has drawn you towards this sound?

Yeah we wanted the rawness/edge of a live blues band to come across in the recordings. It was very scrappy, mostly 1-2 takes of each instrument. We didn't want to overproduce the sound and not be able to pull it off when we played live, most importantly.

7 - Who would be your dream collaboration?

We're all big fans of sixties soul music so to work with anyone who was in/around that scene at that time would be a privilege.

8 - Any new songs in the pipeline?

We never really stop so I'm sure there will be some new ones in the live set before too long.

9 - Any new singles or EP's that fans can be expecting?

We will be releasing our new single, 'Preacher Lover', on October 11th at the Cellar in Southampton. We had the pleasure of recording it at Abbey Road Studios so we're looking forward to showing people the results.

10 - Any live dates coming up?

The aforementioned on October 11th is our next big local show for the next couple of months, so we're really going to throw ourselves into that.

THE 'QUICK FIRE ROUND'

1 - Favourite band?

Kings Of Leon.

2 - Favourite new band?

Catfish And The Bottlemen are good. Not normally my sort of thing but I caught them live a couple of times and they're fantastic.

3 - Favourite song?

It changes every week but at the moment probably 'Young Americans' by David Bowie.

4 - Favourite album?

'Moondance' by Van Morrison.

5 - Vinyl, CD or download?

I like vinyl but it depends what the kind of music is. Old blues and soul is best for vinyl but if you were listening to something much more modern then it doesn't have the same authenticity, in my opinion.

6 - Style icon?

I don't really have one. Being perfectly honest.

7 - Favourite clothing brand?

I'm not really big into fashion so couldn't say.

8 - Favourite film?

Reservoir Dogs.

9 - Favourite TV show?

The Sopranos/Breaking Bad.

10 - Who would you like to play you in a film of your life?

Jack Black as everyone so graciously compares me to him!

11 - Favourite food?

Mexican all the way.

12 - Football team?

For me, Liverpool FC...only speaking for myself though!

AL CAPONE: The boys from The Harrington Blues have a chat to us about their latest single, touring with Ocean Colour Scene and much, much more!

The 'INTERVIEW'

1 - Have you been involved with/been in bands prior to The Harrington Blues?

Other than Jack being in a covers band before, this is the only band any of us have ever been in.

2 - How did The Harrington Blues begin?

It started with Sorb and Ben strumming on guitars in the back of a council van before Tom would let us practice in his front room. After a while we decided we needed another guitarist and a singer so went on the look out around the town and found Josh and Jack (the pirate).

3 - Where did the name The Harrington Blues come from?

The name came from a sky blue Harrington that Sorbi used to wear. In the early days we had been jamming together but never had a name, so that was it decided in Quay hole Kate's over many bears...The Harrington Blues.

4 - How would you describe the sound of The Harrington Blues?

We see it as a mix of influence from 90's Britpop and rock 'n' roll...so Britpop 'n' roll I suppose.

5 - Your debut single, 'Al Capone', is a high energy indie anthem. What is the song itself about and can you explain the reference to the infamous gangster?

'Al Capone' is basically about a group of lads bombing around town thinking they're top boys, the dons, thinking they can do what they like, when in fact they're nothing..."you're not Al Capone".

6 - The video for 'Al Capone' features a group of individuals participating in a robbery who bump into you after exiting the shop. Is this based on a true story?

No, sadly nothing that exciting has happened to us. But after the video I think we're well practiced to step in to be the heroes.

7 - You've already toured with 90's Britpop legends Ocean Colour Scene. How did it feel being asked to open for such a legendary band and has it had a boost for your career?

For us it was a highlight so far, we're all massive fans of Ocean Colour Scene as well. It was new to us, the big professional set up, huge stage, lighting, P.A., blokes running around everywhere. But the crowd was the main thing, the better the crowd, the better the gig.

8 - Who would be your dream collaboration?

There's loads of people we would love to work with, but if we had to pick one. I think Dizzee Rascal without a doubt. It would be different but amazing. The bloke's a legend. Who wouldn't want to get it on with Dizzee.

9 - Any new songs in the pipeline?

Yeah, we've been working on quite a few new ones recently down the shed where we practice, we've got some different sounding songs coming through and some right belters that I can't wait to start playing live.

10 - When can fans expect the next official release from the band and will it be released physically this time round?

It's going to be bigger and better, we've been recording a few demos recently which were going to put out on an EP. We've found a few tunes for the next single and we're going to be working with produced Jamie Lewis on getting a belter of a track done, dusted and released. We're mega excited about it, knowing some of the people that Jamie has worked with. We're hoping to push it through the BBC Introducing and get ourselves heard a bit more. As far as a physical release...no idea.

11 - Any live dates coming up?

We've been writing and recording the last couple of months so were gagging to get back out and gig. We're playing a hometown gig in Stamford in September to kick start it all and are headlining Camden Barfly later in the year (date to be confirmed) but we have a few other gigs in the pipeline. Check out our Facebook for more info on those.

ACTION REACTION: Ted from Decoy Jet sits down and has a chat with us about the band's sound, 'Action Reaction' and much more!

The 'INTERVIEW'

1 - Had you been in/experimented with any bands before Decoy Jet?

Yeah, we've all been involved in bands for a while. Some really bad ones too! Alan and Connor have been playing together for years and with Zac they had a whole band apart from a frontman. They'd known me from my previous band and asked me to join.

2 - How did Decoy Jet begin?

I was doing a lot of solo acoustic gigs and was writing songs that only really worked for a full band so didn't work acoustically. So when the others came up to me with a full band ready to go I jumped at the chance.

3 - How would you describe your sound?

A distinctive British sound. Indie tinged rock and roll with a groove that gives you no choice
but to move with it. Think 60's rock and roll mixed with 90's post-punk.

4 - You're a fairly young band but you already count Carl Barat among your fan base. How does it feel to have acclaim from such a big name in the music business?

Still a bit surreal for me, considering The Libertines were one of the main reasons I wanted to be in a band. Really great that people like that still support new music, at the end of the day they're music fans just like us. It does help give us a bit more credibility swell but we'd prefer to let the tunes do the talking.

5 - Your debut song 'Action Reaction' has quite a 90's/Oasis/Britpop feel to it. Is this the direction you always wanted to go with Decoy Jet or was it something that came about with practice?

That just came from the vibe of the song when I wrote it, brought it to the others and that's how that came out. We'd like to think we have a variety of different songs, we pride ourselves on no two of our songs sounding the same. Will be interesting to see how the next single is received considering it's got a different vibe!

6 - Who would be your dream collaboration and who would you most want to write with?

Johnny fuckin' Marr! I've loved everything he's been involved with. When he joined The Cribs for Ignore The Ignorant that just took them up another level for me. I'm sure he'd do the same with us with his eyes closed.

7 - Any new songs in the pipeline and are there any new singles or EP's planned to be released?

Next single out in the very near future.

8 - Any live dates coming up?

Just come off the back of an extensive load of shows in July so we got a few little ones to keep us going and will have a new list of dates to post within the next couple of weeks. Looking into coming up to Scotland at the end of this month, then hopefully Sheffield and Norwich shows, while of course playing in London as much as possible.

The 'QUICKFIRE ROUND'

1 - Favourite band?

This caused some major dispute between us...but there's only one answer really - The Beatles

2 - Favourite new band?

The Sundowners

3 - Favourite song?

The impossible question...All Day And All Of The Night

4 - Favourite album?

Arctic Monkeys debut changed a lot for all of us so I'll be safe and say that, but our list of favourite albums is endless

5 - Vinyl, CD or download?

Black wax

6 - Style icon?

Dylan

7 - Favourite clothing brand?

Paul Smith, if only I could afford it...

8 - Favourite film?

Pulp Fiction

9 - Favourite TV show?

Mighty Boosh for Connor and I, Game Of Thrones for Alan and Zac

10 - Who would you like to play you in a film of your life?

Samuel L Jackson motherfucker! Just imagine...

11 - Favourite food?

Proper fish shop chips

12 - Football team?

I'm Spurs, Connor's Hammers, Alan's a Gooner and Zac couldn't care less! Derby days are always interesting.

FOREVER UNMASKED: Nick from New Street Adventure has a chat to us about his love for soul music, the story behind 'The Big A.C.' and he reveals how New Street Adventure began...with an N!

The 'INTERVIEW'

1 - Had you experimented/been in other bands before New Street Adventure?

Just bands at school, this is my only musical venture really, although some of the boys have been in various bands before.

2 - How did New Street Adventure begin?

With an N

3 - Where did the name New Street Adventure come from?

My love of music comes from my Dad, who played us soul from a very young age. I wanted the name to be some sort of homage to my dad. He used to take us to a news stand in south east London when we were younger for sweets and it always seemed like a big adventure so news treat adventure became new street adventure. Weird I know

4 - How would you describe your music?

Brilliant

5 - What records were on around the house when you were growing up, was it mostly soul music? Or was soul music something you discovered later on in life?

Bobby Womack: I remember 'Messin up a good thing' and 'Home is where the heart is' playing in the living room when I was 5or 6! Also Aretha, Stevie Wonder- I went through various phases but came back to soul at about 18.

6 - Since forming as a 3 piece you have grown into a much larger collective. Was this always where you planned on taking the band or was it just a natural process?

It was natural really but once Ashley joined the band and we had two really decent musicians (the other being the drummer!) in the band I thought I may as well go the whole hog! We've been so lucky with the guys we met; it means I can concentrate more on singing as I don't have to play guitar in every song- our show is much better as a result!

7 - 'The Big A.C.' was one of the first songs of yours that I ever heard. Can you tell us the story behind that song and who is that dancer in the video of 'The Big A.C.' on your YouTube page!? (He's got some moves man!)

The first time my Dad took me to the 100 club I was having a piss and saw 'whoever thought standing here would be a waste of time?' graffitied behind the toilet. For some reason it stuck with me and turned into a song about immersing yourself in all this amazing old music. The big AC is a nickname one of my mates gave my dad when we were on holiday years ago- Dads a bit of a local legend in Uckfield! Sadly they've painted over the graffiti, I'd love to know who wrote it. The dancer?! You have to make it along to one of our gigs and you're sure to meet him!

8 - The latest EP was called 'Say It Like You Mean It'. Why?

It's a line in one of the songs; I chose it because a lot of my songwriting is very personal and the lyrics are very truthful. I thought it summed up what we do pretty well

9 - You have recently signed to the legendary Acid Jazz label. How is it being on such a incredible record label with a large legacy? Does it put any pressure on you or does it spur you on to become part of that legacy?

It spurs you on really. Obviously there have been some amazing Acid Jazz records and our aim is to make the best one yet!

10 - Who would be your dream collaboration and have you collaborated with anyone so far in your career?

I'd say Alex Turner- he's one of the only songwriters I really have respect for and I like everything he's done. I would say Bobby Womack as he's my hero but I would be so in awe I don't know if it'd be right?!

11 - Any new songs in the pipeline?

Too many! We'll be experimenting a bit more with the new stuff as well...

12 - You've released two EP's and one single to date. Are there any plans for a full-length studio album?

There certainly are, watch this space!

13 - Are there any live dates coming up?

Sherry sound festival in Jerez, Spain on 24th august, Blind tiger in Brighton on 25th August, water rats in kings cross on 28th August, dingwalls in Camden on 12th September, Camden barfly 4th October, cafe GIGO in Cardiff November 23rd, lennons in Southampton 24th November, more tba!

WHO'S GONNA LOVE US NOW: We have a chat with Joel from The Last Of The Troubadours - he talks about their latest EP, the collaboration with Steve Diggle and much, much more!

THE 'INTERVIEW'

1 - How did the Last Of The Troubadours begin?

Basically myself and Darron met at a gig (can't really remember who) in about 2011. We got chatting about all things music. He had a band going called Connett and we talked about having a go at writing together. I'd only ever been a solo artist really and was interested in the idea of writing with someone else.
We exchanged a few ideas via little sound recordings on phones and finally got together with a guitar and a few beers. We quickly had a batch of about 6 songs, only acoustically, that we were really excited about. Our original idea for the band was to have a kind of collective, with various friends from bands we knew coming in and out on different tracks. Luke had just moved to my flat in London, so he was the obvious choice to get in on drums.

After a few simple rehearsals Rob Pyne joined, having left The Rifles, and it all just clicked.

2 - You seem to take a huge amount of pride in your appearance and are always looking very sharp, do you consider yourself a 'mod' band and is style as important as the music?

Style is very much a part of us, and yes it is important.

I don't  consider us to be a Mod band personally. I think that Mod is such a broad thing and when I think of Mod bands, I think of the sort of bands that have targets all over the shop and play scooter rally's and jump around trying to imitate Weller from 1979. That is not us at all. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that, if that is what people are into, its just not for me.

I dislike the whole 80's Mod revival. I can't think of much of the music from that period that I like? Once again, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it, but that doesn't inspire me, but then it shouldn't really. That was the people of the 80's take on it, which is what its all about. Mod is an evolving thing.

I am inspired by the 60's. The music, the style and the culture. At the same time, we are not dressing up. It's just who we are 24/7, and its our interpretation of a style.

3 - How did the relationship with Delicious Junction begin?

Darron had a long standing relationship with DJ. I became involved with them with my Music Promotion Company Leamington Daze Music. Once me and Darron started to work together, Delicious Junction were keen to be part of it. They were at our very first live show, which was a LDM event. We had The Real People playing in London for the first time in years and TLOTT did a support slot. It was an acoustic set with just myself and Darron.

On the strength of the set Delicious Junction Records was formed and we have worked very closely ever since.

We have designed our own line of shoes which are due for release in September this year.

With the world in the financial mess it currently is, we cannot stress strongly enough how grateful we are for the backing DJ have given us in putting out our first 2 EP's

4 - The title of your new EP is 'Don't Stand On Shadows'. Why?

Basically, I was walking with my daughter Lyla, it was a beautifully sunny day and we were playing " i spy" and various other little games. She then said " Ok Daddy, here is the new game! Don't stand on Shadows"

I just thought it sounded really cool and wanted to get it in a lyric at some point.

I sat on it for a while and then when we were all booked in to the studio for the new EP sessions, we had 4 tracks ready to go that had been in our live set for some time but not been recorded. I really wanted to get something brand new on the EP that no one had heard, and it all fell in to place nicely.

5 - How did the collaboration with Steve Diggle come about?

I had known Steve for a while via my good friend Terry Rawlings. We had had many boozy nights over the years all together. We had often talked music and ideas.

We then had a gig at Pretty Green in Covent Garden postponed due to licencing issues at the last minute, and as a lot of people had arranged to come, we decided to turn it into a bit of a booze up.

We plotted for the day in the sun outside the Spice of Life on Charring Cross Road and had a great day with a big crowed. Steve was there and me and Darron were talking about our new tracks and the planned EP and we asked Steve if he would be interested in playing on a track. He said he would but we thought it might have been due to the various drinks that had been sunk by then.

I sent over the demo of Never Forgive You for him to check out and again he said he was up for playing on the track.

Anyway, a couple of months passed before we were in the studio. Steve as always was very busy but we gave him the dates and just left it that it would be great if he could make it but we would understand if he couldn't.

Well it was Jan 2013 and London was at a complete stand still under about 3 foot of snow. Being the top man that Steve is, he came all the way across town on a Sunday in that horrible weather and really made the track.

6 - Having already collaborated with Steve Diggle, who else do you want to collaborate with?

There are no plans at the moment, but in all honesty, we are happy to work with anyone if we are in to what they are doing

7 - Any new songs in the making?

There are always a few bubbling over so I'm sure we will be bringing a few new tracks to the set soon

8 - When can we expect more music to be released from the band?

We are busy with live shows up and down the country for the rest of 2013 so there won't be anything this year

THE 'QUICK FIRE' ROUND
1 - Favourite band? The Beatles2 - Favourite new Band? Kasabian/ Arctic Monkeys / Miles Kane3 - Favourite song? Too hard to call as it changes by the hour. I would say my favorite song released in my life time would be THE RIVER BOAT SONG - OCEAN COLOUR SCENE4 - Favourite album? Again too hard to call for same reason as above. 5- Favourite clothing brand? John Smeadly6 - Style icon? Serge from Kasabian7 - Who would you like to play you in a film of your life? If I could choose anyone ever it would be Oliver Reed8 - Favourite film? Another tough one??? Hmmm? Lock Stock and two smoking barrels and Snatch9 - Favourite food? I do love a roast! Either Beef or lamb with all the trimmings10 - Football team? Wimbledon (They don't exist anymore)
