ONLY REMEDY: We catch up with Joel from The Last Of The Troubadours!

The Last Of The Troubadours have had a busy last few months, topped off by a UK tour supporting The Rifles. However, just as the recording process for their debut album begins, two key members depart including frontman Darron J Connett. We have a little catch up with guitarist Joel Rogers to find out why and to see what the future holds for the band.

Enjoy!

AB Records: "The Last Of The Troubadours have come a long way in the last few months - you have continued to gig heavily, have supported The Rifles and have started work on a debut album. It seems, from the outsiders perspective, to be a really exciting time for the band. You have however just announced the departure of singer and frontman Darron. How did this come about?"

Joel Rogers: "We had a great end to 2013, as you say, with some great shows and ending the year with supporting The Rifles on their tour. The dates we did were amazing and we all had the best time! Yeah, Darron has decided to leave and we wish him the best in whatever he does. It came about by him saying he wanted to leave. I wish I had a better story, but that's it. We will always love him, but he felt it was his time to go. That said, TLOTT roll on regardless and as you mentioned there is a debut album bubbling over which we are really excited about!"

AB Records: "How will Darron's departure change the dynamic and set up of the band. Will you bring in a new lead vocalist or will you step up to fill these shoes?"

Joel Rogers: "We become a four piece again I suppose. For whatever reason, the line up has evolved since we kicked off and very rarely, if at all, out of choice. But I guess this is the next stage. No, we are spoiled for vocals. With Neil Amon now in the fold on bass, we not only have a great all around musician, but also another vocalist, in addition to the vocal talents of Tony and Luke, we have so much scope to explore."

AB Records: "You have already begun work on your debut album. How will Darron's departure affect this? Will you start anew or keep going with the current album?"

Joel Rogers: "The album we started writing will continue, nothing changes there. What is written so far is sounding interesting so there is no reason to change anything, we will just take our time to make sure we have the sound we want for it. It's pretty clear in our minds the feel and sound we want from the new tracks."

AB Records: "What can fans expect from the long awaited and eagerly anticipated debut long player?"

Joel Rogers: "Well I hope, a great  collection of eclectic tunes that will get everyone going, singing and moving!"

AB Records: "Over the last few months the band have gone from strength to strength. A definite highlight must have been supporting The Rifles. Would you say that playing these bigger venues with acts such as The Rifles make you 'up your game'?"

Joel Rogers: "We had the best time on that tour! We just enjoyed every minute but in all honesty, we play every show as if it's the Albert Hall. Even if it's only a half full venue."

AB Records: "Away from the gigging you have also found time to record a video for the 'Don't Stand On Shadows' track, 'Shame On You'. Why did you pick this song for a music video and what is the song itself about?"

Joel Rogers: "It was a natural choice from the last EP. We have done a Christmas gig/party for the past two years, and we decided to shoot a 'warts and all' live video last year for this video. We were pleased with how it ended up."

AB Records: "As a very style conscious band you must have been excited to design the Troubadour shoe with Delicious Junction. Thanks again for my free pair! How did this project come about and can we be expecting more Delicious Junction-Troubadour collaborations any time so?"

Joel Rogers: "Glad you liked them. Yeah we loved the end result. Not every band can say they have their own designed shoe. We will always love Delicious Junction, all they have done for the band and every thing we have done together."

AB Records: "Just before you go can you let us and our readers know what sounds you are currently grooving to in The Troubadour camp?"

Joel Rogers: "Most of our time currently is grooving to what we are writing! We really hope eventually you all do too!"

THE BENEFITS OF A DOWNHILL PAPER ROUND: A review and a track by track of The Ragamuffins' latest offering!

The Ragamuffins’s avatar

Below is our review of The Ragamuffins' EP 'The Benefits Of A Downhill Paper Round'. In the second half of the feature you can also find a 'track by track' from The Ragamuffins' very own David Jaggs.

PART 1 - "AB SAYS..."

Below we review The Ragamuffins exceptional EP 'The Benefits Of A Downhill Paper Round'!

"The Ragamuffins latest EP 'The Benefits Of A Downhill Paper Round' is a fine outing all together. Everything from the packaging (see picture above), to the artwork, to the tile, to the most important part, the music, is exceptional. Upon receiving the CD package you will be immediately blown away by the amount of time that The Ragamuffins spend in making sure that their fans have a proper little present instead of just a plain old EP. The CD is packaged within an envelope with logo and title featured upon. Within the envelope, is the beautifully presented artwork of the EP itself along with a small Ragamuffins badge. The CD itself has a vinyl effect to it getting across the band's retro side. Anyway, the EP itself makes an impressive entrance with a Coral-like riff on 'Shoegazing'. Driving drums and rollicking bass then come into the frame as the song makes its way to the 'kids on the war path chorus' which will surely be a sing-a-long point in live shows. The backing vocals are spot on in this opening track as well. Following 'Shoegazing' is the EP's two finest tracks in the form of 'Fingernails & Fairytales' and 'Declan, Put Your Dancing Shoes On'. The former again can draw comparisons to The Coral whilst still retaining a certain 'uniqueness' while the latter is much more of a rocker which sounds reminiscent of a fellow up and coming band, Cheap Cuts (now renamed Man And The Echo). On the remaining two tracks The Ragamuffins explore a slightly more Latin, jazz style which is no bad thing! The closing track, 'Something To Shout About', is another highlight and certainty has the catchiest chorus on the EP. Overall, a fine mix of rock, soul and jazz. Definitely a band to keep an eye on!"

PART 2 - "THE RAGAMUFFINS SAY..."

Below David Jaggs talks us through each track on the EP!

Shoegazing

"This song had a comparatively huge gestation period which began when I was at the Liverpool vs. Napoli game at Anfield in 2010, specifically after seeing a group of about three or four very young Napoli lads surrounded by police outside the Albert pub and thinking how utterly terrified they looked. There'd been trouble in Naples a few weeks before the match at the away leg with some Liverpool lads being attacked in a restaurant I think by Italian ultras and so the atmosphere wasn't very hospitable around the ground to say the least. Just a few little words and phrases popped into my head when trying to keep my head down and get to the bus without any trouble, being a lover not a fighter and all that... Anyway, I was revisiting some lyric notebooks and found the ideas I'd jotted down and remembered this slightly chaotic guitar riff I'd written when getting my acoustic out on the top deck of a completely empty bus home after a night out which fitted in. When Florin started doubling the riff in practices and Xav had the drums rattling along with that almost Johnny Cash (or more recently Jake Bugg I suppose!) train rhythm and Alex added that utterly hypnotic bassline everything just seemed to fit together nicely so we went from there! It also made sense to call it 'Shoegazing', not to do with the eighties indie sub genre, but given most of the band's slight obsession with footwear, whether it's my stupid numbers of trainers, Sam and his hi-tops or Xav blowing a fortune on Oliver Sweeney shoes!"

Fingernails & Fairytales

"'Fingernails & Fairytales' is a re-recording of an older song that I'd demoed a few years ago and abandoned somewhat because the vocal never really managed to span that balance of fragility and tenderness it needed with the heartbroken subject matter, yet still sung 'well' enough with it being quite a high note in the choruses to lift the tune to make it work properly on record. In all honesty I don't think I was a good enough singer when I wrote the song but have got better vocally and as a musician and we worked out the harmonies better to give it an extra dimension. The solo started sounding really nice with the 12-string style guitar line going on. In terms of writing the song itself, it was the classic songwriter's thing of finding a new chord out and then straight away wanting to use it in a song with the menacing sounding diminished progression and melody in the verses."

Declan, Put Your Dancing Shoes On

"'Declan, Put Your Dancing Shoes On' is sort of a response song (in terms of the title at least) to Elvis Costello's 'Tramp The Dirt Down' that I wrote in the weeks after Margaret Thatcher's death, but more specifically after her actual funeral. The news was awash with sound bytes and anger and you couldn't help but come up with ideas off the back of that, especially when so many of the unsavoury things she did during her time as Prime Minister seemed to be getting glossed over. It's sort of meant to imagine some bizarre, trans-existential funeral service and wake with people both alive and dead, friend and foe turning up and offering their two-penneth to what's going on, and name-checks everyone from Bernard Ingham to Judy Garland. I put some mad synthesiser arpeggios and 'swooshes' on this because there was so much space without the bass in the verses it just felt like we COULD do something like that, and this immediately made me go back and do some similar sonic things on 'Shoegazing' because I was worried that it'd make 'Declan' sound a little musically isolated on the record if there weren't some similar musical themes!"

Eleven In The Afternoon

"'Eleven In The Afternoon' was trickier to record than it probably should have been. It's inception was a result of our former bassist and my good mate Paul dropping a wonderful 'Ringo-ism' (a la 'Hard Days Night' and 'Eight Days A Week') when attempting to organise meeting up, but is more about feeling guilty when wasting a day recovering from a night out and absolutely everything seems to wind you up. The opening ninth chord was another 'songwriter learns new chord' situation but the almost Latin, bossa feel was a bit of a joke originally and just the way I finger-plucked the chords when messing around in our practice room. I think Florin was initially impressed with the melody and chorus lyric which spurred me on to have a go at writing the whole thing but I thought it'd end up as a straighter, faster song. When we tried to do this however it sounded RUBBISH; it was very amateurish and had the teenage band sort of quiet/loud verse/chorus contrast thing you do when you first buy a distortion pedal and an electric guitar and form a band with your mates as a sixteen year old. I knew we could do much better and with a few breakbeat ideas from Xav the first bossa idea I had morphed into something that sounded like 'us'."

Something To Shout About

"'Something To Shout About' is a song about the perils of over-doing it on social media, but I was extremely conscious of how it'd look written down if I called it 'Nothing Much To Shout About' so changed the name accordingly. I wrote it all around that slightly odd chord pattern in the verses and the chiming post-chorus guitar and it just all seemed to make sense with Sam, our keys player firing out a Cuban style piano line in the intro. The tumbling trumpet line at the end seemed as good a way to close the EP as any as well! We were really, really happy with how the 'ah' backing vocals came out as an overdub in the last chorus as, sadly, we can't do them to quite that extent live (yet!) without audience participation, but it made sense and gave that bit of the song a massive lift."

SUNSHINE: Our review of Mayfield's "Tempo Of Your Soul"! This album will be the soundtrack of the summer!

Mayfield | Tempo of Your Soul

Below is our review of Mayfield's brilliant album 'Tempo Of Your Soul'.

PART 1 - THE REVIEW

“Tempo of Your Soul is without a doubt one of the finest funk albums of recent times. From start to finish it goes from strength to strength. With brass a plenty, soulful vocals, driving drums and bass, catchy guitars and keyboards; the album is masterful. The eponymous opening track sets this tone for the album and ‘Superwoman’, perhaps not intentionally, shows the band’s unwavering self-belief as the following lyrics are sung: ‘I am invincible, I am incredible’. Mayfield are, as a unit, definitely ‘invincible’ and ‘incredible’. This fact is demonstrated best on tracks such as ‘Like Walked Out’ and the funky ‘Get Up’. Another highlight in the album is ‘Dream Girl’, opening with a catchy bass hook and a rattling hi-hat cymbal. The chorus is astonishingly catchy as well. The album then closes with ‘Sunshine’ which will be finding its way on to multiple playlists this June and July. Overall, a superb album and one you need to get your hands on. This will be the soundtrack of your summer!"

TEMPO OF YOUR SOUL: We have a chat to Dom Elton, keyboard player in Portsmouth-based soul/funk band Mayfield!

Photo: Hello there, our next interview will be with Portsmouth's finest soul/funk fusion band, Mayfield! Stay tuned! AB Records

PART 1 - "THE INTERVIEW"

1 - What was your earliest musical memory and what pushed you towards pursuing a career in the music industry?

"Listening to my dad's copy of 'Revolver' by The Beatles...got me hooked and must have listened to it a thousand times!"

2 - Had you been involved in any other band prior to Mayfield?

"I've played in several bands since school, including mod, soul and ska bands."

3 - How did Mayfield begin?

"With a desire to create a vintage soul/funk sound whilst preforming original songs with a big line up."

4- Where did the name Mayfield come from? Was it a homage to Curtis Mayfield?

"Exactly - Curtis Mayfield is one of my all time heroes."

5 - How would you describe the sound of Mayfield?

"Eclectic mix of soul, funk, Latin jazz, R&B and rare groove that we like to call 'Mayfield soul'."

6 - Your soul/funk sound is quite unique in the musical climate of today. Especially with the domination of 'chart music'. What do you like about this specific genre of music and what drew you to it?

"From my first visit to a Northern soul do during the early eighties during the Mod revival...hooked almost immediately. The music is sublime and has proven to be a life long love."

7 - You originally started off as a three piece. Can you explain why you have now evolved to eight members and what do you think the extra band members bring to your sound?

"To create a full vintage soul sound, we needed a bigger line up including a brass section. Also, Gloria is originally from Chicago (birth place of Soul) and brings authenticity to the overall sound."

8 - Your current album is called 'Tempo of Your Soul'. Where did this title come from and why did you choose it?

"This comes from one of our songs, track one of the album, and is a homage to soul music ref: 'no urging to be learning'."

9 - What influenced the album as a whole?

"To create a sound that appeals to both old school soul fans and new school soul fans and crosses over various genres on the soul side."

10 - "Get Up" is one of the finest songs on the album. It is a right funky number with a lot of soul. What is this song about and what influenced it?

"Essentially to inspire people to 'Get Up' and dance...much about soul is to do with dancing as well as the music itself - think of the dance moves inspired by the Northern Soul scene."

11 - Do you have any 'rituals' before you go on stage?

"No, just to check my keyboards are working!"

12 - Any live dates coming up?

"Yes - quite a few...check out our website."

13 - Any new songs in the pipeline?

"Yes several - these will feature in an album called 'Keep On' (homage to Northern Soul) including 'Breathless', 'Watcha Gonna Do' and 'Work, Love and Family'."

14 - When can fans be expecting the next release?

"Summer 2014...Keep On!"

15 - Who would be your dream collaboration?

"Paul Weller, who else!?"

YOU CAN'T GO ON, YOU GO ON: Our interview with alternative trio, Last Of The Light Brigade!

Part 1 - "THE INTERVIEW"

1 - What was your earliest musical memory and what inspired you towards persuing a career in music?

"Attempting to sing along to 'What Became of the Broken Hearted' in a car. Probably about three. Still love that song. My dad bought me my first guitar for my 13th birthday and I listened to 'What's the Story Morning Glory?' for the first time. That's where it all began."

2 - Had you been involved with any other bands prior to Last Of The Light Brigade?

"Not really, in some form it's always been LOTLB. Don't think I could ever be in another band to be honest, that's probably why our stuff seems quite diverse, just however I'm feeling!"

3 - How did Last Of The Light Brigade begin?

"Well it all began at School just under a different moniker. We played out first gig at fourteen."

4 - Where did the name Last Of The Light Brigade come from?

"A very late night discussion with two good friends of mine. We were talking about how romanticised The Charge of the Light Brigade has become. Typical British really. it just clicked."

5 - How would you describe the sound of Last Of The Light Brigade?

"That's quite tough as it can vary. I'd be more than happy for anybody to help me out on that one!"

6 - You're a fairly young band right now but have already had acclaim from the likes of Janice Long and Wilko Johnson. How does this feel and did this acclaim have a boost in your career?

"Yeah definitely, supporting Wilko was great. One of our best gigs I think. It's great to be able to say we were the last band ever to support him too… (I think)."

7 - Your latest single, 'You Can't Go On, You Go On', was out just last month. What is this song about and what influenced the song?

"It's about a young lady struggling to adapt to working life. with a twist obviously. Very Morrissey I suppose."

8 - Who would be your dream collaboration?

"Shirley Bassey."

9 - Any new songs in the pipeline?

"Tons!"

10 - When can fans be expecting a new single, EP or album?

"We will be releasing new material at the end of the year, hopefully Christmas time. Don't worry though it won't be a Christmas song!"

11 - Any live dates coming up?

"Yep, we got a ton coming actually which you can find out about on our website or facebook page. Really looking forward to it.

12 - Who would be in your dream supergroup?

GUNPOWDER ROAD: An interview with American band Chaos Of Birds!

Photo: Interview with Chaos of Birds coming soon! AB Records

Part 1 - "THE INTERVIEW"

1 - What was your earliest musical memory and what inspired you towards perusing a career in music?

Meghan: "I remember sitting in the car with my mother listening to '50 Ways To Leave Your Lover' by Paul Simon and my feet barely hung over the seat, so I know I was really young. By the time I was about seven I knew I was going to be a musician, it might have been Andy Gibb that made me pursue that idea at first."

Will: "My earliest musical memory is of my Fisher-Price record player, my poor mom, I mean who wants to listen to Davy Crockett at six AM for two years straight? I wore the groves off that thing. My pop got me into music, we restored this acoustic guitar he found in the trash in the seventies and taught me a few chords. It's been downhill ever since."

Nicole: "I remember watching my dad trying to learn to play the trumpet when I was a toddler. I though it was amazing to watch that shiny thing make loud noise."

Matt: "Watching my dad play honky-tonk on a Cadillac-green hollow-body Gretsch."

2 - Had you been involved with any other bands prior to Chaos of Birds?

Meghan: "Special K, Mavis Piggott."

Will: "Ha, none you've heard of..."

Nicole: "Mavis Piggott, Fire Party and Special K."

Matt: "Yes, a few. Grave Tulips, Wild Easy Mom, INICU, Scythian, Stone Killers, Mind, Gutwrench, Dixie Lowell and the Mississippi Mudfish. Royal Trux, Sawdust."

3 - How did Chaos of Birds begin?

Meghan: "Chaos Of Birds began in 2004 when Will and I decided to start playing music together. We moved out to LA from DC to play with some friends that lived out there and we recorded the EP, but it didn't work out. The timing was wrong, the city was wrong. We moved back to DC and kept playing out. Then we relocated to Oakland and resurrected it with Nicole and Matt."

4 - Where did the name Chaos of Birds come from?

Meghan: "The name came up when I was telling a friend about this weird bird magnetism I have. I've been chased by crows, harassed by turkey vultures, dive bombed my sparrows and finches. I had a bird fall out of the sky and die at my feet. There's something going on there that I don't understand. It's the 'Chaos of Birds'."

5 - How would you describe the sound of Chaos Of Birds?

Meghan: "Filthy, swampy Goth rock."

Matt: "Swamp rock."

Meghan: "See, it's swampy."

6 - Who would be your dream collaboration?

Meghan: "I can't possibly answer that question. There are literally hundreds of people, alive and dead, that I would want to collaborate with. Chopin? Jimmy Page? Howlin' Wolf? Peter Murphy? I could go on and on."

Will: "What, only one? How about R.L. Burnside inviting Frank Black over to his place. And Frank would pick up Toots and the Maytals on his way of course."

Nicole: "Why dream when the present is fantastic?"

Matt: "Tom Waits."

7 - Any new songs in the pipeline?

Meghan: "The pipeline is all new songs. There's a pipeline a mile long completely packed with tunes."

Will: "Always."

8 - When can fans be expecting a new single, EP or album?

Meghan: "We'll be recording a single in December in Manchester with Eromeda Records and then hopefully a new album shortly after."

9 - Any live dates coming up?

Meghan: "We will be touring the UK the first two weeks of December!"

10 - Who would be in your dream super group?

Meghan: "Elizabeth Fraser, Johnny Marr, Budgie and Simon Jones from The Verve. And Tricky. And they are all my minions."

Will: "I'd pay a days hard earned wages and then some to see Earl Hines lay it down with John Hartford and John Hurt. I'm sure being dead wouldn't stop any of them."

Matt: "Me (on bass, because it's my dream), Peaches and Luz Interior (vocals), Eddie Hazel (guitar), Bonzo (drums) and Flavor Flav (playing whatever he wants)."
