PART 1 - "THE INTERVIEW"
1 - How did The Assist begin?
"The idea
came about from both vocalist, Mikey Stanton, and guitarist, Ryan Stanton;
brothers of whom both had aspirations for people to listen to their music. It
all suddenly escalated from bedroom jams to local gigs and serious studio
practice. Drummer Ben Faulkner and bassist Jak Baker joined the band April this
year through a mutual friendship of love for great music."
2 - Where did the name The Assist come from?
"With all
the lads being football fans, we thought the name 'The Assist' would go well
with our aspirations to one day also appear on Soccer A.M."
3 - How would you describe the sound of The Assist?
"The
genre we would describe ourselves as is indie or alternative, it's music that anyone can identify
with from sing along anthems to infectious guitar riffs. We combine our
influences of The Stone Roses, The Twang and Twisted Wheel to create a raw
indie, alternative sound that also has a get up and smash the place up feel to
it!"
4- 'Ghost Broke My Guitar' is one of your songs and is an upbeat indie anthem. What influenced this song and what is the song itself about?
"The song is all about an
incident at practice, basically Mikey stood on Ryan’s guitar and completely
obliterated it, we took pictures of the guitar in its broken state for
insurance purposes and when we got back home and looked at the photos we saw
strange clouds and orbs on the photos, an easier way of falling out we decided
to blame the ghost for braking the guitar!"
5 - You have played with Bruce Foxton’s From The Jam in the past. How did it feel meeting such a legend and to be sharing a stage with him?
"To be honest we really
appreciated the opportunity and it was an honour but his attitude weren’t the best,
he wouldn’t have a photo with us and had no intentions of speaking to us."
6 - Do you have any 'rituals' before you go on stage?
"We have a ritual we die
by and that is to get absolutely paralytic before we perform! Always works well
for us."
7 - Any live dates coming up?
"Coming up we have our biggest
gig to date headlining the O2 Academy 3 in Birmingham on the 15th
November!"
8 - Any new songs in the pipeline?
"Yeah, we’re always writing
new songs, we met up with Tim Abbot not so long back (Creation Records, Oasis)
and he advised us to never ever stop writing."
9 - When can fans be expecting the next release?
"We’re aiming to release
an EP sometime next year but we haven’t set a date yet, these things can take
time with going through the release process and getting the songs on iTunes
etc.!"
10 - Who would be your dream collaboration?
"A collaboration wouldn’t
really work with another band so we’d have to say Paul Weller."
11 - Who would be in your dream supergroup?
"Our dream supergroup
would have Liam Gallagher as lead singer, Chad Smith on drums, Flea on bass and
John Squire on guitar!"
